Sydney in the month of the false summer. A harbour city drenched in heat, raining lavender petals from Jacaranda trees. Beaches spanning Balmoral to Palm Beach; surging oceans from Bondi to Bronte. A kaleidoscope of cuisine; Japanese, Thai, Italian, Mexican, South Indian, authentic; often fused. Outdoor symphonies, theatre and art, both moving and banal. Films along King St, heaving with students, as the cool wind envelopes my knees. A sun that sets at 8pm in front of the Opera House. This is Sydney in Spring. I always see it in winter, when the Southerly winds rise and the rain covers the city in a slick, cold sweat. But this is spring and summer. And Sydney is alive. And its flowers bloom.
