Millie Goes to Germany

From the land that brought us techno, Beethoven, Pilsner, Marx and everything in between; Germany is more than its poster boy image of cold efficiency. Once existing as a diverse collection of kingdoms, Germany is full of contrast sure to hook any visitor. Experimental Berlin sits side by side Christian conservative Bavaria, with pristine woodland trails, castles and super clubs found in between. Anarchists jostle for space with artists, industrialists and capitalists. It's Europe's engine room - full of ideas, at the forefront of trends and loaded with hearty food and beer to boot. What's not to like?

1. Germany produces over 5,000 varieties of beer.

2.  Germany has one of the oldest political parties in the world, the SPD, dating back to 1875.

3. Germany has over 103 Nobel Prize Laureates.

4. 34% of the population is atheist.

5. Germany has the oldest universal public health care system in the world, dating back to 1883.

6.  Germany has the highest number of overweight people in Europe.

7. Arts receive public funding and that Germany has hundreds of orchestras, theatres and libraries.

8. The  latest BBC opinion poll found that people believe Germany had the most positive influence in the world in 2011.

9. The British Royal Family is actually German, hailing from the House of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha.

10. German philosophers, economists and thinkers have pretty much dominates modern theory, from Marx, Nietzsche, Hegel to Kant.
