Scents and Sensibility

The sense of smell is one of my weaknesses. I once sat beside this talented, good looking guy in a cinema and was easily crushed by his ghastly scent.  It really was a deal-breaker from me. I've never considered dating him afterwards. Some guys may not be as appealing but one whiff of a sexy cologne makes me think twice.

It's something about the smell of a fresh clean skin or maybe your Pheromones.  A Pheromone is a secreted or excreted chemical factor that triggers a social response in members of the same species. If your Pheromones aren't doing a good job finding you a potential mate, then you must consider enhancing it through perfumes and colognes.  In animals such as ourselves, sex pheromones indicate the availability of the female for breeding. Male animals may also emit pheromones that convey information about their species and genotype.  Through the manipulation of the scent, you may eventually attract a potential partner suitable for breeding purposes.I'm trying to be very technical here but in layman's language: if you wanna get laid, take care of your hygiene and use cologne. I was lucky enough to have been told by friends and lovers that I smell good even when I sweat. I have been very meticulous when it comes to smelling good and have always tried to keep every inch of my body pleasant and fresh.

Here are some tips on how to smell good whole day. This is based from my experience so you may have a different strategy. Feel free to share.

1. Take a shower or bath everyday. This is not as applicable in colder countries but if you can, please, take a shower everyday.

2. Make sure to put shampoo on your hair or conditioner as hair accumulates dirt and is the first one to stink in our body.

3. Use shower gels or fragrant soaps. If you are uncomfortable with the smell of scented soaps, try lavender, it's a bit of a safe and relaxing scent for everyone.

4. Use a good deodorant.

5. Brush your teeth and keep your mouth/gums and teeth healthy.

6. Always have TicTac or mint in your bag or mouthwash.

7.Try to use mild scented moisturizing lotions as it tends to stick to your skin.

8. Apply perfume on your:
- neck
-chest or cleavage
-back of your knees
-spray a bit on top of your hair like a hairspray

These are the areas where the scent will most likely last.

9. Have a "touch up" cologne or perfume with you in your bag all the time. I usually bring an inexpensive perfume in my bag that complements the smell of my expensive perfume to keep me fresh all day. I try to reapply when I think the scent is wearing off.

1. Colors by Benetton
2. Anna Sui shower gel
3.The Body Shop Mango shower gel
4. Elizabeth Arden Revealed
5.  Story of Flower
6. Paris Hilton CanCan
7. Armani Mania
8. Clinique Happy Heart
9. Lacoste Essential
10. Vera Wang Princess
11. Acqua Di Colonia
12. YSL Baby Doll
13. Hugo Boss Red
14. Acca Kappa Hibiscus

Some of my favorite perfumes and shower gels. As you can see, I kept the Vera Wang Princess bottle because it's just beautiful!

one of my most favorite perfumes from Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella in Florence, Italy

The Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Nuova' or 'Pharmacy of Santa Maria Novella' is located in via della Scala in Firenze, at part of the convent of Santa Maria Novella.

Established by Dominican friars in 1221, the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella is one of the oldest pharmacies in the world. The monks began to cultivate the herbs that they need to prepare medications, balms and creams for the monastery's little infirmary. And ointments including a rosewater disinfectant thought to protect against the plague.

The pharmacy was officially born in 1612, on the suggestion by the grand duke Fernando I . And a century later their herbal secrets had become internationally renowned. The pharmacy room is furnished with shelves in the neo-Gothic style. The frescoes on the walls by Paolino Sarti celebrate the splendor of pharmacies in the world.Today, traditions are being carried out with unaltered success - many of the items are still made from slightly modified 14th -16th century recipes. The production is limited and is meticulously controlled and only the highest quality natural ingredients are used.

Their products include:  Essences, Pomades, Spirits, Balms, Liqueurs, and other preparations

something very modern: Paris Hilton's Can Can has a sweet almost candy-like scent to it while Armani Mania  is oozing with sex appeal.

My YSL Baby Doll on the other hand, takes a while on the skin before the scent really sinks in

 Do's and Don'ts Perfumes:

-Spray perfume after shower since your pores will be open and your skin will be able to absorb the scent better

-Spray extra perfume if you have dry skin or is in a drying air conditioned room. Cold weather tends to weaken the scent

-Buy perfumes that match your personality

-Buy different perfumes for different occasions

-Store your perfumes in room temperature and stay them away from sunlight

-apply just the right amount to avoid intruding people's noses too much

-Don't spray perfume on costume jewelry or pearls as the alcohol in the perfume may discolor them

- Some perfumes may stain white garments

-Don't use the same perfume for a whole year since the weather can alter the scent on your skin

-Try not to buy online without knowing the scent of the perfume on your skin. Perfumes smell differently on each of us so even though this brand may smell good on your friend, it might not be the case for you.

I hope these tips have been helpful. You may put on a pile of cologne or the most expensive perfume but a healthy lifestyle is a sure way to have a fresh scent. Whatever you put in your body, comes out of you. Eat lots of fruit and vegetables, drink lots of water, sleep well and avoid smoking/drugs etc. If you're a smoker, always have a gum with you. If you're doing drugs, you're fucked. Good luck!

Eat What You Love: Grams Diner Review

Most people in Manila don’t really know what a good burger is. Whether you agree with that or not, it is a fact that we’ve grown up with crunchy burger buns, floury tomato, and thin and dry patties more in common with Thai fish cakes. But, there’s been a fair bit of movement towards the classic American-style cheeseburger, of late – with everything stripped back, but made big.

Leading the charge south of Makati is Grams Diner. Tucked away in Molito, across Alabang Town Center, Grams is friendlier than 50s, but still keeps the white lines and sleek Cadillac streak to recall that era. With staff that is more laid back and feel like family, Grams does a good job of replicating the American diner experience. It’s always fun to come late in the evening -the bright diner, serving up shakes and burgers on a dark night makes you feel like you’re in Hopper’s Nighthawks painting.

Evidently, the standout on the menu are the burgers. A great burger starts with great meat – shit meat equals a shit burger. Thankfully, it’s hard to go look past the top of the line burger on the menu. The buns are steamed and they mince their own high fat content, US beef patty into the size of your fist – exactly the way it should be. While there are some vegetables, it’s oozing with layers of cheese and smoky sauces. You’d best have an appetite and P400 on you for this burger.

After a long day at the office, traditional, well-oiled American fare is the ultimate comfort food. However, if you’re not that famished, the menu is full of great nibbles from the Chili con Carne, Idaho Mash Potato, wide variety of meat and salad and the very Filipino dish Tapsilog-something a Filipino-stye diner would definitely have. Their Tapsilog is to die for. A must try for any Tapsilog lovers. Nothing fancy, but extremely tasty and well made American-Filipino fare, with none of the regional quirks so common to purportedly ‘American restaurants’ in the metro area.

Photos were taken after overtime work. Mark waited for me for 12 hours so we could eat a very late dinner together. Sigh. I love you.

I Miss The Time When This Was "WORK"

I had the most awesome time last night in Malate. I went to "The Library" a comedy bar and restaurant and was able to watch "Ate Gay", "The Raging Divas" and so on. For some odd reason, I was very relaxed as I let crass humor entertain me. As I gazed at the drag queens, oblivious to their banters, I was immersed with musings on the hardships of survival, earning money and becoming independent. I'm not quite sure if the performers were enjoying their acts but it sure beats having an 8AM-7PM work where you abhor the people you work with and the job itself. Comedians and actors may have long hours but at least I know some of them wouldn't want it any other way. Which brings me to these pictures above--the memories when "these" used to be my "work". I absolutely loved every minute of it. Working on a film may be stressful but it's the kind of stress that you embrace. We may have filmed from 6AM-3AM but I really, really did not mind because I was having so much fun with what I was blessed to have been doing.

I was the make up artist/actress/everything else and it was a position I would not trade for a higher income in a company that would deprive me of my time and creativity. I'd rather have more time than money. Money can never buy me lost quality time with family, friends and loved ones. I'd rather be able to express my self freely than be trapped in other people's small minded ceilings and idiosyncrasies.  Or so I thought... Eventually, the pressures of stability and what my family perceived as a "real job" got the best of me and I hated it. I hated myself for it but I had to face the hard truth that I, as the rest of the world, needed a stable job. The only consolation I got was that I had the privilege to move forward any time and find the right career that I would love without thinking about any responsibility like a child or feeding my family for survival. My family does not ask anything from me and I spend my salary selfishly. It's a blessing I know and I'm glad about the choices I made before that led me to have more choices now. I'm still in search of the 'right' job/path--not the perfect one, but something that would feel right like a good pair of shoes. Once I have found it, I will keep it, treasure it and be the best at it but for now, I will let crass humor entertain me and keep me sane. A positive attitude/laughter is always a good start.

Etude House Haul For Girls On A Budget

1. Proof 10 Eye Primer- P298 - cheapest eye primer but good quality. Doesn't last that long but hey you get what you pay for.

2. Lip and Eye Remover-P198 - I really love this product. This is a lot better than Maybelline's  make-up remover sad to say. It's cheap but it lasts long.

3. VIP Girl Dear Darling Lips OR 207- P398 - Tried it a while ago. Not that great. I thought it would be pigmented but not really. Thorough review to follow.

4. Apricot Stick Gloss #5- P198 - I'll be very honest, this smells familiar. If you have a responsible guy around and you let him smell this, I'll bet you he'll know what I'm talking about. Anyway, if you don't, I hope you'll learn it soon, it means you're a responsible kid as well :) I like this lip gloss though, it kinda holds my Tangerine lipstick together, fills in the uncolored spaces.

5.Darling Nails Matte #06-P98 - ACK! never gonna buy again! The color is nice and all but my nails look dead!

6. Free pocket mirror for every P1000  purchase. It's cute. That's all.

Went shopping a while ago and had to buy some make-up essentials like my eye primer and make up remover. I was quite curious about the Tangerine lipstick from Etude. I've been buying all sorts of lipstick recently, might have been craving for a kiss or two. Haha.

Broken Hearts

I can’t sleep. I’m thinking of all the people I should never have fallen in love with. I keep replaying the moments when I should’ve realized they were wrong for me and noticing that I did realize but I went through with it all anyway. And as they were breaking my heart, I would have already forgiven them.
Such a violent thing, the breaking of a heart. And yet so easily dismissed and the pain never validated and we feel guilty for lying in bed, crying, for days, or weeks. We can’t call in sick to work. We can’t go to a doctor to set that broken thing inside us. There’s no medication to be prescribed to help us recover. They tell us it takes time, we’ll get over it, but we have broken hearts. There are shards inside our chest cavities that cut whenever we breathe. There are jagged pieces floating through our blood, screaming against our soft, thin skin. There are splintered bits flung as far as our eyes, irritating them so they’re constantly red and watering; pushing against them and making us dread the light. The biggest chunks get lodged in our brains, forcing us to remember every promise that was broken and the exact way their lips shaped the words “I love you.” Our hearts are festering wounds infecting our bones, swelling our joints, making it impossible to move.
So much violence and we’re only given half-hearted sympathies and assurances that we’ll fall in love again someday.
Of course we will! We know that. But right now? Our hearts are broken and we ache. Isn’t there anything you can do for that?

Women Can't Have Too Many Shoes: SHOE COLLECTION PART 1

The start of my growing collection. We were very quiet not to let our dad see this (he was busy surfing the net). If he did see this, we would've gotten a long scolding and he would've demanded to have half of this obliterated. lol but true. :)

Mark realized that my Havaianas collection would soon be replaced by shoes one day. He was right. I bought a new one and am waiting for 2 more this week. By the way, a big thanks to my sister Margie for helping me set this up :)

Every time I buy a new pair,  I feel guilty and give some pairs to charity almost every month. I didn't realize there were still more since most of the time, they're all in boxes and cases :)

I don't really wear flats and sandals now so my sister uses them. Also, our chucks collection is... hmm.. I really don't know where they are now. My sister's friends lost some T___T

To be honest, I just started seriously collecting shoes last year (2010). It was unnecessary to buy shoes during college because there wasn't really any occasion nor time to wear them. Anyone from UP will agree that it is futile to wear shoes around the campus, and yes, even ballet flats were uncomfortable. Good ol' Havaianas comforted our weary feet with tan lines.

When I started working, my Havs became "car slippers" for driving , they were replaced by wedges, pumps and peep toes. My mother told me that whenever I get my pay, I should treat myself with a "reward" for another month of hard work. She was very determined to have us graduate on time so we could get a job, earn money, save a lot and spend on some luxuries once in a while. That was the plan. Her constant reminder was to focus and not have any children/responsibility  at an early age so we could enjoy our "pagkadalaga" until we are financially and emotionally stable. My mother carved the importance of having an ambition so that we could always move forward and have a wider perspective of what's happening in our lives today.
So far, so good.  Whenever I show my mother new shoes, she would just nod and smile or sometimes ask me to show the price tag. She would still remind me to save more and spend less.

So yeah, 2010 had been really good to me. Following my mother's advice proved to be beneficial as I am now enjoying the fruits of my labor. I'm still planning on expanding my collection provided I still have space and of course, cash. Some may say I'm wasting money but hey, I only have one life to live and more importantly, I could always use "..but I'm a girl/woman!" excuse. :)

This is a repost because the link for this post is not working :)

Anyway, here are the links of my shoe collection since 2010:
